On Wednesday 3rd June, the character Wolfie, from the popular Nagoya TV morning program “Dodesuka!” visited Aichi International School. On live TV around half of the AIS student population performed the “Wolfie Dance.” Before this a number of students welcomed viewers to the school in their native languages, four students competed in the “Wolfie Challenge” and the Elementary School Principal and some students spoke about the significance of having the TV reporters and film crew at the school.
Dancing was a constant theme throughout the month of June at AIS. As well as practicing the “Wolfie Dance” students rehearsed their team chants, and in some cases stomping and fist pumping, for the annual Sports Day. This year’s overall champions at the end of the kindergarten and elementary school races were Blarney (the green team).
Then, towards the end of the month students started to learn traditional Japanese dances for the Tanabata festival at the beginning of July. The school has an afternoon festival on the first Friday in July, where students can eat shaved ice, play ring toss, dance, write wishes, play ball games and make crafts. All staff and students wear jinbei or yukata (traditional Japanese clothing) to the festival, with the conclusion of both the elementary and kindergarten events seeing all students dancing around a stage in the middle of the concert hall of the school building.
Following all this dancing everyone can look forward to a good rest over the summer holidays … or even a bit more fun if they are planning to come to the AIS summer school starting at the end of July!
