Summer school at Saint Maur International, Yokohama

Saint Maur International School offers a summer school program for children from preschool (age 2½) all the way up to students entering grade 12 in the fall. The program begins on June 16 with options to enrol for 2, 3, or 4 weeks for children from preschool to grade 12. For grades 2 to 12, the 4th week (July 7 to 11) is called “Exploration Week” and follows a curriculum unlike the first three weeks of regular summer school.

In the preschool, children age2 ½ to 5 closely follow the Montessori curriculum and philosophy.

In the Grade 1 Headstart Program, learning opportunities that focus on preparing students academically for entry into Grade 1 are provided.

In Grades 2 to 5, the International Primary School (IPC) Curriculum is followed, and includes maths, science, language skills, Japanese, physical education, computer education, and arts and crafts. During Exploration Week children engage in activities such as swimming, bowling, tennis, and field games, as well as a field trip to explore the Enoshima caves and beach, and a visit to a science museum/planetarium.
In the middle and high schools, subjects offered include maths, digital media, creative writing, basketball, Japanese, introduction to Mandarin, journalism/global issues, physics, biology, and more, although some courses are for high school students only. The summer school curriculum is designed to reinforce the fundamental concepts and skills necessary for academic success, and combines serious academic study and physical activity in a relaxed atmosphere.

The Exploration Week consists of two classes (students may take one or both classes). Morning classes are in first aid and CPR training, and afternoon classes cover manga skills. Students attending the full-morning, five-day training course will receive the Malteser First Aid Certificate. The full-afternoon, five-day course offers both introductory level and more advanced skill-building in areas of manga comic book development.
Students need not be enrolled at Saint Maur during the regular school year in order to participate in the summer school program. Japanese children attending Japanese schools are also welcome to register, provided that they are bilingual. There is no language requirement for preschool children.

Saint Maur’s desire is that children will find its summer school program to be an enjoyable learning experience. For details, please see: http://www.stmaur.ac.jp/learning/summer-program/index.aspx.
