Jingumae International Exchange School held its Japanese Culture Day on February 27. This year’s theme was “Traditional and Contemporary Japanese Culture.”
From the traditional aspect of Japanese culture, students enjoyed hinamatsuri (doll festival) by listening to the kaguyahime story and decorating dolls through making origami. They also sang a traditional doll festival song — Ureshii Hinamatsuri.
They explored contemporary Japanese culture by tasting dorayaki, which is Doraemon’s favourite snack; playing a board game about the Yamanote Line; decorating the school with their favourite Japanese animation; and singing Doraemon’s song, Yume o kanaete. The preschool and kindergarten students danced the Marumaru morimori.
Later in the afternoon the Japanese Dance ASP students and teacher performed the Nihon Buyo (Japanese dance), the former also performed some hip-hop dancing, and a special guest played the flute. — KAYOKO KOBAYASHI
