Even before the first day of classes, learning had started at The American School in Japan. While Japanese students (including some from Ishinomaki in Tohoku) at the Summer Day Camp enjoyed a variety of activities, the school’s leadership team was involved in an intensive two-day workshop with leading educationalist Robert Garmston. “For a school, learning should be the focus at all levels, from students to parents and faculty,” says Head of School Ed Ladd. “These professional learning opportunities are a valuable way that we can continue to grow as educators.”
Garmston is a world-renowned consultant and co-developer of the cognitive coaching model and co-founder of the Institute for Intelligent Behaviour with Dr. Arthur Costa. Garmston, who is Professor Emeritus of Educational Administration at California State University, specializes in leadership, learning, and personal and organizational development and is the author of the seminal book The Adaptive School. During the workshops with the ASIJ administrators, faculty, and counsellors, Garmston outlined various techniques involved in cognitive coaching.
