Tokyo International School (TIS) hosted the first-ever TEDxYouth@Tokyo event on November 20.
300 students aged 11–18 years old gathered to share ideas, form connections, and build skills as part of a global event that now has over 50 planned events around the world. The one-day conference was held at TIS from 10am–3pm, and simultaneously streamed live online.
Speakers shared their ideas in 6–12-minute talks or performances that covered areas such as design, juggling, videography, entrepreneurship, music, community building, and dance.
TED curator Chris Anderson said, “This day started off as an experimental idea, and in a few short weeks has blossomed into something much bigger than we’d imagined. It’s been astonishing to see the level of passion with which people want to bring TED-like presentations to a younger audience. Quite where it leads, we’re not sure, but we could not be more excited.”
Last month was another busy month for the TIS community, with the 7th graders putting on a “cocktail party” in the front lobby for their parents, along with an exhibition of the pottery they had created at October’s arts camp.
Part of the students’ recent creative endeavours also included a performance at Rock Challenge Japan.
